Each May, Passport DC transforms Washington, DC into a global classroom through cultural showcases, performances, embassy open houses, and family-friendly experiences that celebrate the many cultures represented throughout the nation’s capital. This year, we joined WHUT and Passport DC for a special Ready, Set, Explore! curated walking tour during the annual Around the World Embassy Tour, which was a memorable experience for both kids and adults alike.

About This Guide

Sarah Acors is your DMV Kid-friendly Weekend Curator! She’s a DC Native, local parent and the founder of 4DMV Kids, a family-focused platform that helps parents discover kid-friendly, educational, and culturally rich experiences across Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. This piece recaps WHUT’s Ready, Set, Explore Curated Walking Tour as part of the Around the World Embassy Tour experience.

Our first stop was to the Embassy of Colombia, where visitors had the opportunity to walk through parts of the embassy’s beautifully designed main level. We explored the elegant living room quarters and the main dining area while learning more about Colombian culture and hospitality. One of the highlights was the marketplace featuring Colombian-made gifts, clothing, snacks, and artisan goods that gave guests an opportunity to take a small piece of the culture home with them.

Next, we headed to the Embassy of the Dominican Republic, where the atmosphere was lively and festive from the moment we arrived. A live band was preparing to perform, filling the space with excitement and anticipation. Guests sampled traditional foods while browsing another vibrant marketplace filled with handcrafted items and cultural treasures. My son and I purchased a Dominican Cake, which is a light, moist pound cake with charred, whipped icing. SO good!

Our third stop may have been the most memorable of the day—the Embassy of Kenya. Guests were treated to delicious samples from Swahili Village, including a flavorful rice dish native to Kenya that quickly became a crowd favorite. This embassy experience beautifully highlighted the importance of food and community in the celebration of culture.

After the walking tour concluded, my son and I made one final stop at the University of the District of Columbia in Van Ness to catch the tail end of the Around the World Embassy tour festivities. We explored cultural displays representing many countries including Indonesia, St.

Vincent and the Grenadines, and Uganda. The sample of saltfish from St. Vincent was amazing and we also enjoyed a special hip-hop fusion Lion Dance performance that blended traditional and contemporary styles in such a fun and engaging way.

One of the things I appreciate most about Passport DC is how accessible and interactive the experiences are for families. Events like Around the World Embassy Tour encourage curiosity, cultural appreciation, and meaningful conversations while allowing kids to experience the world without ever leaving the DMV.

Throughout the month of May, Passport DC offers countless opportunities to connect with cultures from around the globe through embassy tours, performances, festivals, and educational programming across the city. Kenya is a story that tells itself; I was simply there to listen with my camera.

This past March, I had the privilege of representing Howard University’s College of Arts and Sciences on a journey that felt less like a study abroad and more like a homecoming. Traveling through the streets of Nairobi and the coastal breezes of Mombasa, I was not just a student; I was a witness.

Through my course, Africa in the Disciplines in Kenya, I explored the complex intersections of environmental policy, indigenous governance, and women’s development, but my heart (and my research) was focused on the education and language. In a world that often tries to homogenize culture, I used my lens to capture how education and policy live within the people and how it is preserved through younger generations. As an aspiring filmmaker, I have realized that every culture is a living script. My photo journal is a thank you to Kenya. It is a curated glimpse of education, policy, and people, animals, and the land processed through my lens and preserved for yours.

The Chapters of the Journey

The rhythm of this trip was multifaceted, and I have organized my documentary work into five distinct chapters that reflect the soul of Kenya:

I. Nature’s Guardians

In the quiet tension of Nairobi National Park and the towering grace of the Giraffe Center, I witnessed that you can have both city life and wildlife without the disruption of wildlife destruction. These images aren’t just about the animals; they are a tribute to the people dedicated to protecting them and the landscapes that hold the history of the earth itself.

II. The Fabric of Culture

From the vibrant textiles of the local markets to the intricate adornments that signify heritage, clothing in Kenya is a language of its own. This gallery explores how identity is woven into every thread and how traditional craftsmanship continues to thrive as a form of resistance and beauty in a modern world.

III. The Flavors of Home

Food is the ultimate connector and my personal favorite. I couldn’t let a single plate hit the table without snapping a photo first. This gallery is a collection of those table-side moments; it’s about the aesthetic and the daily capture of sitting down to a meal that felt like a warm hug.

IV. Faces of the Journey

The heart of any documentary project is its people. You know how they say a picture is worth a thousand words? With the people I met, it felt like a thousand years of history. Every portrait was a conversation. I didn't just want to take a photo, I wanted to capture that undeniable energy and pride. These are the people holding down the culture and making sure Kenya’s traditions stay loud and clear for the next generation.

V. Terrains, Horizons, and Aesthetics

As a filmmaker, I am always looking at how a landscape tells a story. This final chapter captures the physical space of Kenya, whether is was a busy street, or quiet spaces of Nairobi to the open, quiet horizons of the Mombasa coast. It is a look at the atmosphere of a nation where history and the future are constantly meeting.

This experience overall reinforced my commitment to storytelling that centers on social justice and global impact. Studying abroad is always an enriching experience, but in Kenya, it felt like a realignment of my creative purpose. 

I had many firsts within this experience and built many relationships that I hope will grow with time. A graceful thank you to Dr. E. M. Lisanza for opening the doors to her home and heritage, and to my Howard peers for being the family I needed on this journey. You made every frame more worthwhile. 

A huge thank you to WHUTV for providing a platform for student storytellers to share our work with the world. As a media student and filmmaker at Howard University, having the support of an institution that truly understands the power of the "Bison perspective" is everything. My recent documentary work in Kenya was a journey of the soul, and having WHUT champion projects like this makes a world of difference for young creators entering the industry.

Against the backdrop of a city marked by inequality, these young debaters confront daily challenges that range from housing instability to neurodivergence. For some, debate is a path to college. For others, it’s a lifeline.

5pm - Unveiled: Daisy Bates and Johnny Cash is new. It takes us to the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall and follows the creation and installation of two new statues from Arkansas and celebrates the enduring legacies of two of the state's most iconic figures. Daisy Bates, who courageously led the fight for civil rights, and Johnny Cash.

Understanding the Gap

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects children of all backgrounds, but research continues to show disparities in diagnosis, access to services, and long-term support for Black children. According to organizations like Autism Speaks, Black children are often diagnosed later than their white peers, which can delay early intervention—one of the most critical factors in long-term development.

Cultural stigma, lack of access to healthcare, and systemic inequities all play a role. In many Black communities, conversations around developmental differences are still evolving, and families may face additional barriers when seeking support or even recognition.

Why Representation Matters

Representation isn’t just about visibility—it’s about validation. When Black children with autism see themselves reflected in media, education, and advocacy spaces, it reinforces that their experiences matter. It also helps dismantle harmful stereotypes and broadens public understanding of what autism looks like.

WHUT believes in amplifying stories that reflect the full spectrum of our community. That includes highlighting Black educators, therapists, parents, and advocates who are leading the way in autism awareness and care.

Groups like the Autism Society of America and local chapters provide support groups, workshops, and advocacy tools tailored to families’ needs.

Support policies and programs that expand access to early screening, therapy services, and inclusive education—especially in underserved neighborhoods.

3. Support Black-Led Initiatives

Seek out and uplift organizations and professionals who are specifically focused on serving Black families affected by autism. Their culturally competent care can make a critical difference.

4. Educate Yourself and Others

Awareness starts with understanding. Learn the signs of autism, listen to lived experiences, and challenge misconceptions when you encounter them.

5. Create Inclusive Spaces

Whether in schools, workplaces, or community centers, inclusion means more than accommodation—it means intentional design that welcomes neurodiversity.

For Earth Day, WHUT’s Sunday Special turns its focus to ecology and environmental awareness, reinforcing the station’s role in lifelong learning.

Jonathan Baxter – Springfield, VA  9th Grade

I enjoy playing sports such as soccer, tennis, and golf and I volunteer at my local library and help out in my community. I also enjoy watching films such as Star Wars and Marvel with my family and friends. My dream is to one day become an engineer and hopefully become a Disney Imagineer and help spread joy around the world. I have always enjoyed working with my hands and building things that make others happy.

Marshall Friedman – Germantown, MD  11th Grade

I'm a member of my schools Global Ecology program (GESP), which focuses on teaching its students environmental advancement and activism. As a GESP and Poolesville student, I'm passionate about law, government, history, and their relation to environmental issues. My future goals are to attend undergrad for public policy, and later attend law school. I'm involved in local/state politics, my school History Bowl team, as well as local nonprofits and organizations. As the president and founder of an environmental organization, our team has raised $2.5K+ for local environmental causes!

Rhyan Gray – Windsor Mill, MD  12th Grade

I’m 17 years old, from Baltimore, Maryland, current Senior scholar- athlete at the Bryn Mawr School for Girls, where I have been challenged to think critically, lead boldly, and use my voice with purpose. I am service-oriented and proud member of the Black Student Union, a Leadership Ambassador for St. Jude and Alumni Ambassador for Art with a Heart. I founded Girls Who Tutor, a student-led tutoring and mentoring initiative recently recognized with an Executive Citation. As a B.E.S.T. and MERIT Scholar, I aspire to pursue a career in medicine while creating lasting impact through service and leadership.

Joseph Harrison IV – Brandywine, MD  11th Grade

I'm a junior at Georgetown Preparatory School, with a passion for leadership, service, visual art, and international business. I’m a member of National Art Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and the Student Liaison for the Black Student Association. Additionally, I’m a member of the First Tee of Greater Washington Golf Club, and the National Harbor Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., where I serve as the Teen Sergeant-At-Arms. My achievements include the Dean’s List, Scholastic Art & Writing Regional Gold Key and National Silver Medal, Congressional Art award, and several academic-based leadership programs.

Kofi Hair-Ralston – Baltimore, MD  11th Grade

After sending hundreds cold emails to land my first research internship, I learned that dreams require relentless optimism. That lesson led me to start VenturEd, a global opportunity platform that's connected over 9,700 underrepresented young adults to jobs and guided 400+ Fellows from 39 countries into their first internships. At school, I lead the lobbying club and serve as co-head of the school newspaper. My dream is to become a venture investor who backs the founders others overlook - the ones who might not have the pedigrees, but excel in vision. I believe talent can come from anywhere, and it's our job to create spaces where anyone can realize their dreams.

Alani Jordan – Laurel, MD  9th Grade

I’m a passionate scholar-athlete and a former Sports Illustrated Kids Reporter. I aspire to become a Formula 1 engineer focused on sustainability in motorsports. At school, I co-lead S.O.L. (Latine/Caribbean club) and I participate in Rocketry Club. I’m also a member of OBAP and NSBE Jr. I play varsity soccer and represent Saint Kitts and Nevis on the Women’s National Team. I'm the founder of Thrifty Nifty Athletics Inc., and I’ve collected 500+ sports bras and gear to donate and empower girls in sports worldwide.

Rushil Kukreja – Falls Church, VA  12th Grade

I’m a 16-year-old from Falls Church, Virginia building sustainable technology and advocating for environmental policy. After learning about the link between light pollution and breast cancer, I founded Princia, an initiative that’s since grown to 250 advocates, won $15,000 for research, and presented at the United Nations. I also serve as the President of four clubs at my school and developed StarLaunch, a machine-learning powered app to make rocketry more accessible for younger students nationwide. My dream is to use my passion for sustainability to brighten our futures while dimming the lights.

Naomi Mahanyu – Frederick, MD  10th Grade

I love taking challenging math courses and competing on the Science Olympiad team to grow myself in STEM. I am passionate about inclusivity, kindness, and the power of self-confidence— values I am excited to promote as a dermatologist! In the future, I hope to start up my own cosmetic dermatology practice. Outside of school, I love to read, style hair, and volunteer at my local art center. While striving to help others feel at home in their own skin, I will place my trust in God’s guidance.

Domenique Sexton – Chesapeake, VA  9th Grade  (*)

I am currently a sophomore at Grassfield High School in Chesapeake, Virginia where I’m in the Governor's STEM Academy. I value playing soccer, traveling, and spending quality time with my loved ones. I have a dream of majoring in Sports Management/Administration, paving my own path as a woman in sports. Some extracurriculars I’m involved in include, Jack & Jill of America Inc.,Tidewater Student Advisory Council, and SCA. I have done school supply and book donations drives for a homeless shelter in my local area called ForKids, as well as being involved in VICYC for The AME Zion Church.

I'm involved with my school's tennis team, Academic Challenge Team, and FCCLA. I have a strong passion for helping animals. My dream is being able to work with animals as a zoologist. Here are several impactful women connected to Washington, D.C. whose stories are worth discovering.

Nannie Helen Burroughs – Educator and Advocate for Black Women

An influential educator and activist, Nannie Helen Burroughs founded the National Training School for Women and Girls in 1909. At a time when opportunities for Black women were extremely limited, her school emphasized academic excellence, job training, and leadership development. Burroughs believed education was key to empowerment and dedicated her life to expanding opportunities for Black women and girls.

Mary Church Terrell – Early Civil Rights Leader

A lifelong Washingtonian, Mary Church Terrell was one of the first African American women to earn a college degree and became a leading voice for racial and gender equality. She helped found the National Association of Colored Women and played a major role in the fight to desegregate public spaces in Washington, D.C. Her activism helped lay the groundwork for the modern civil rights movement.

Marjorie Lee Browne – Mathematics Trailblazer

Mathematician Marjorie Lee Browne broke barriers in the world of higher education and science. In 1949, she became one of the first African American women to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics in the United States. Though much of her career was spent teaching, Browne also worked to expand opportunities for students in STEM and advocated for the integration of computing in mathematics education.

Anna Julia Cooper – Scholar and Intellectual Pioneer

Often called one of the most influential Black feminist thinkers of the 19th century, Anna Julia Cooper spent much of her life in Washington, D.C. As an educator and principal at the M Street High School (now Dunbar High School), she championed rigorous academic opportunities for Black students and wrote extensively about race, gender, and education.

Eliza Ann Dixon Day – A Quiet Force in Education

Eliza Ann Dixon Day was among the early Black educators who helped shape public education for African American students in Washington, D.C. Through her work as a teacher and community leader, she contributed to expanding educational access during a time of significant racial barriers.

1. Browse Works of Art at the National Museum of Women in the Arts

One of the best places to begin your Women’s History Month exploration is the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This museum is the first in the world solely dedicated to championing women through the arts, highlighting the work and contributions of women artists across centuries.

Exhibitions rotate throughout the year and showcase a wide range of artistic expression—from sculptures and paintings to textiles and contemporary multimedia works. This museum also maintains an extensive online collection that allows visitors to access audio guides and artwork digitally from anywhere.

The National Museum of Women in the Arts offers free community days on the first Sunday and second Wednesday of each month. General admission is $16 for adults and $13 for DC residents, while youth ages 21 and under visit for free, along with persons with disabilities and SNAP/EBT cardholders. March 2026

2. Walk in Mary’s Shoes at the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House

Another powerful stop rooted in both Black History and Women’s History is the Mary McLeod Bethune Council House National Historic Site.

This historic home once served as the first headquarters for the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), founded by educator and civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune in 1935. It also served as her final residence in Washington, DC before moving to Florida.

Bethune was one of the most influential leaders and champions for both civil rights and women’s advancement. Her legacy includes:

● Founding a school for girls that later became the HBCU Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Florida

● Serving as a trusted advisor to four U.S. presidents, including Franklin D. Roosevelt

● Becoming an internationally recognized advocate for civil rights, women’s rights, and human rights

Through the National Council of Negro Women, Bethune worked to unite women’s organizations across the country to advance education, voting rights, and economic opportunities for African American women while improving the quality of life for Black families nationwide.

Today, visitors can walk in her shoes through the rooms where many important conversations and events took place. Located at 1318 Vermont Avenue NW, the site is open for ranger-guided tours Thursday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free year-round, and no entrance pass is required.

For families with older elementary-aged kids and teens, this site offers a meaningful introduction to the intersection of women’s history, civil rights, and community leadership.

3. Explore Entrepreneurship at the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream

The Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream offers immersive exhibits and technology that explore how individuals turned ideas into lasting impact. Throughout the museum, visitors can discover inspiring stories of innovators, entrepreneurs, and leaders whose determination helped shape their version of the American Dream.

A few exhibits families may enjoy exploring include:

● Tree of Generations - Located in the main lobby, this installation invites visitors to become part of a living tribute celebrating the people and stories that continue to shape the American Dream.

● Hologram Ambassadors - On the second level, visitors can interact with lifelike holograms of trailblazing leaders in areas such as financial empowerment, entrepreneurship, health, and education.

● America: Built on Dreams - This 20-minute film on the lower level highlights the accomplishments of several inspiring individuals, including notable women connected to the DC region such as Virginia Ali, co-owner of Ben's Chili Bowl, and Michele Kang, owner and CEO of the Washington Spirit.

The Milken Center is located steps from the White House at 1503 Pennsylvania Avenue NW and is open Thursday through Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Timed exhibition tickets are free, making it an accessible stop for families exploring downtown DC.

Because many exhibits explore entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership journeys, the center tends to resonate especially well with middle school and high school students.

I moved to Washington, D.C. in 1984 from my small but wonderful hometown of Niagara Falls, New York, a newly minted lawyer full of energy and belief that meaningful change was possible. I had just been hired by the American‑Arab Anti‑Discrimination Committee (ADC), a young but essential civil rights organization founded by former U.S. Senator James Abourezk. At the time, that opportunity alone felt life‑changing.

What I could not have imagined was that almost immediately, I would be assigned to work on the historic presidential campaign of Rev. Jesse Jackson.

It was unexpected. It was exhilarating. And it would permanently shape how I understood politics, justice, and the power of international solidarity.

Traveling the Country with a Global Vision

Working on the 1984 Jesse Jackson campaign meant more than policy meetings and legal discussions—though those were certainly part of it. It meant traveling across the country on a somewhat rickety campaign plane with a civil rights icon who carried a message far bigger than electoral politics.

I was part of the Arab‑American team within the Rainbow Coalition, helping identify community members, organize local and national events, raise awareness, and encourage participation—votes, donations, whatever people could give. No contribution was too small. No community too marginal.

Everywhere we went, Jesse drew crowds. Sometimes they were grassroots gatherings. Sometimes private events with artists like Roberta Flack and Lionel Richie. The energy was electric because people recognized something rare: a candidate who was not merely asking for support, but offering respect.

Standing Firm When Others Backed Away

It is hard to overstate how meaningful Jesse Jackson’s outreach to Arab‑American communities was at that moment in U.S. political history. This was a time when other presidential candidates were being bullied into returning donations from Arab‑American supporters—an ugly and unprecedented form of racism in American politics.

Jesse refused to cave.

Instead, he doubled down.

The fact that he openly welcomed us was both earth‑shaking and deeply affirming. He didn’t treat our participation as a political risk; he treated it as a moral necessity. He embraced us as equal Americans and defended our constitutional rights at home—while also standing up for the rights of Palestinians under occupation abroad.

When Jesse spoke about “civil rights at home and human rights abroad,” it was not a slogan. It was a commitment he lived by, even when it came at a political cost.

Courage in the Face of Threats

Most campaign events were peaceful, but not all. I vividly remember a gathering at the home of Arab‑American DJ Casey Kasem, where Secret Service had to physically stop threatening individuals who attempted to crash the event. When they were removed, they climbed trees nearby to continue their attacks.

Even then, Jesse did not retreat. His presence itself was a form of protection—a declaration that no community should be intimidated out of the democratic process.

A Different Kind of Political Leader

Jesse Jackson was never a traditional politician. He was something far more powerful: a trusted agent of change.

He reached out personally to disenfranchised communities and told us that no matter how small or powerless we might feel on our own, together we could create a sea change. I remember one conversation about the consolidation of power and the revolving doors of Washington. Jesse smiled and said, “Former people just get more former.”

That line stayed with me. It made us believe that our generation didn’t have to wait on the sidelines—that we could participate, organize, and transform the system ourselves.

Winning Something Bigger Than an Election

Jesse Jackson may not have won the presidency, but he won something far more enduring: the respect, loyalty, and admiration of people who saw themselves reflected in his call for universal peace and justice.

By opening the doors of his campaign to our community, he made history—and he challenged himself to live up to the values he preached. He practiced what he preached, and in doing so, he changed lives. Mine included.

His legacy is not just political. It is personal. It is international. And it is enduring.

I was fortunate to be there—to hear him, to work beside him, and to witness firsthand what principled leadership looks like.

May his memory be eternal.
And may we honor his legacy by continuing his crusade—and always striving to keep hope alive.

Earlier in his career, he represented ADC before the U.S. Supreme Court in St. Francis College v. Al-Khazraji, securing full Civil Rights Act protections for Arab-Americans. Under his leadership, ADC also helped obtain Temporary Protected Status for numerous nationalities and supported Deferred Enforced Departure for Palestinians in 2024.

Mr. Mokhiber has served in various civic and professional roles, including outreach during Jesse Jackson’s first presidential campaign, leadership within the American Immigration Lawyers Association, and participation in international election observation. He currently serves on the Citizen Advisory Board of WHUT Television at Howard University.

Over the past six decades, few figures have shaped the struggle for civil rights, economic justice, and voter empowerment in the Washington, D.C.–Maryland–Virginia region quite like Rev. Jesse Louis Jackson. As a prominent organizer, preacher, political leader, and tireless advocate for equality, Jackson’s influence echoed through the streets of the DMV — from the steps of Howard University to neighborhood rallies and voter registration drives across the region. 

Born in Greenville, South Carolina in 1941, Jackson rose from humble beginnings to join the front lines of the national civil rights movement alongside his mentor, Martin Luther King Jr.. His journey from Southern activism to national leadership helped galvanize communities here in the DMV, where longstanding traditions of Black political engagement and grassroots organizing found one of their most passionate champions. 

A Lasting Impact on Howard University 

For generations of students at Howard University — often called “The Mecca” — Rev. Jesse Jackson represented the living continuation of the civil rights movement they studied in classrooms. His visits to campus were more than speaking engagements; they were moments of mentorship, mobilization, and moral clarity. 

Jackson frequently challenged Howard students to see themselves not only as scholars, but as leaders with a responsibility to shape public policy, media narratives, and economic opportunity. His call to “Keep Hope Alive” resonated deeply with students preparing to enter law, journalism, medicine, politics, and ministry. 

Through his work with the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and his historic presidential campaigns, Jackson expanded what political possibility looked like for young Black leaders — many of whom were educated right here in the District. His 1984 and 1988 presidential runs inspired campus organizing, civic participation, and conversations about representation that energized Howard’s political culture. 

For students studying communications, Jackson’s mastery of message and moral framing offered a blueprint. For those in political science and public service, he demonstrated how grassroots organizing could move national policy. And for the broader Howard community, he embodied the university’s enduring commitment to truth, leadership, and social justice. 

Championing the Vote and Civic Participation 

Long before “get out the vote” became a staple of modern political campaigns, Rev. Jackson was organizing voter registration efforts in urban neighborhoods and on college campuses — including right here in the District. His commitment to expanding the franchise resonated deeply in the DMV, a region with one of the nation’s most civically engaged Black electorates. 

With the rallying cry “Keep Hope Alive,” Jackson inspired generations to see voting not just as a right, but as a responsibility — empowering residents across D.C., Prince George’s County, and Northern Virginia to make their voices heard. 

Standing with Local Movements 

In Washington, D.C., Jackson’s presence was more than symbolic. He stood with residents confronting displacement and advocated for fair housing, economic equity, and justice in historically Black communities across the city. 

Whether addressing crowds at Howard, supporting clergy coalitions, or joining rallies for civil rights protections, Jackson consistently reinforced the idea that justice must be local as well as national. 

A Spiritual and Generational Bridge 

For many in the DMV, Rev. Jackson was not only a national figure — he was a familiar voice in our civic life. His presence at churches, universities, and community forums served as a bridge between generations of leadership, connecting the civil rights era to today’s movements for voting rights, economic fairness, and racial justice. 

His affirmation — “I am somebody” — continues to resonate in classrooms, sanctuaries, and community centers throughout the region. 

A Legacy That Lives On 

Rev. Jackson’s legacy is embedded in the DMV’s ongoing advocacy — in the organizers mobilizing communities, the students finding their voices, and the elected leaders working to expand opportunity and equity.
